Go Ahead, Make My Day ! (Idioms With Day)

In the dirty Harry movies, film star Clint Eastwood would often use his catch pharase : “Go ahead, Make my day!” to tell the bad guy that he would be very happy to make the latter’s life miserable. Now, that remark is one of many expressions with the word “day” that speakers of English often use. Here’s a list of such idioms.

1. A red-letter day : An important and memorable day for Edward, April 1st will be a red-letter day : It’s his wedding day!

2. Call it a day : To stop doing something
Guys, let’s call it a day and go home; I’m totally beat.

3. Carry/ win the day : To be the winner
Kevin carried the day by shooting the best picture

4. Doomsday : day of judgment, a day on which something bad might happen.
The day that I’m out on the street for not paying my rent will be doomsday.

5. Every dog has his day : Everyone will be lucky at least once
People call him Unlucky Sam not without reason, but every dog has his day, right?

6. First see the light of day : To be born
Judith first saw the light of day when her brother was barely one year old.

7. In this day and age : Nowadays
In this day and age, almost everybody owns a cell phone.

8. The other day : a few days ago
The other day I came across an old friend whom I hadn’t seen for years.

9. That’ll be the day : (exclamation) : That will never happen!
Lazy Leopold exercising? That’ll be the day!

10. Rome was not built in a day : An important job can not be completed in a short time.
We need time to get this project done. Remember, Rome was not built in a day.
